FOUNDER

RODRIGO GUTIERREZ

Corialent

12 years ago, Rodrigo decided that the Coca Colas of the world shouldn’t be the only ones who get to have all the fun in the advertising industry. He was sick of all the dull, corporate, navy blue and white B2B work out there. Business people are people too. Corialent specializes in B2B marketing that doesn’t suck. And they want to get the rest of the industry drinking that delicious KoolAid.

Goal Setting

Goal setting is an explicit and intentional process which begins by identifying a goal, strategy, or project that you wish to accomplish. Then, you develop a strategy for achieving it, devise a plan to execute it, and finally you work diligently to successfully complete it. Rather than just running in without a specific goal, such as a half-marathon, which needs much more careful planning, an accurate goal is one which begins with clearly defined intentions and is carefully executed to the point of satisfying your personal and professional goals. It is not something that you just "go through" without any conscious thought and no effort on your part.

In order to set goals, you must know how to formulate and articulate them. Without clearly articulating your goals, they will remain just a list, rather than an actual goal. Without a clear direction and roadmap to guide you, it is very easy to get off course and drift off course toward the unachievable. Goal setting and achieving are two separate processes. You cannot achieve your goals unless you know how to set them.

Goal setting, while recognizing your intentions, is also managing your time. Goals are usually too big and complex to fit on a single page. So managing your time is an important part of goal setting. One of the keys to effective management of time is knowing your goals, developing a comprehensive plan to reach them, implementing the plan, and maintaining consistency throughout the process. If you can manage your time effectively, you will be able to reach all of your goals.

Goal setting, while managing editors, is also managing your emotions. Emotions are a powerful force that can derail even the most careful plan. Managing your emotions during goal setting and achieving your personal goals are related. Both require the ability to remain calm under pressure and in the face of resistance.

Goal setting also includes your willingness to take steps to achieve your long-term goals. You have to decide what you are willing to do to reach each of your short-term goals. Without the willingness to commit yourself to your long-term goals you will remain a sitting duck at the end of the rainbow, never reaching your goals. Be smart about your goals and you will set smart goals.

As I outlined in the introduction, goal setting works by managing your time, emotions, and perseverance. These are the ingredients for successful goal achievement. However, it is impossible to achieve your goals without the support of others. The more people you have helping you achieve your goals, the better off you will be.

You can achieve both short-term and long-term outcomes with goal setting. If you focus only on the short-term objective then you will get frustrated. On the other hand, if you focus only on the long-term objective then you will fail. Goal setting and goal achievement are connected because the success of any given process depends upon how effectively it was applied. Goal setting is just a tool for the accomplishment of these processes and outcomes.

Goal setting does not have to be difficult. In fact, it can be quite simple if you learn how to apply a few proven psychological principles. Once you have mastered these techniques, you will be able to set goals that will help you achieve your personal goals, become self-confident, and increase your overall level of personal confidence. When you start using these techniques to set goals and achieve your outcomes, you will see that the road to success runs this path.
